In 2007/8 1.23 billion journeys were made and a total of 49 billion passenger kilometres travelled (both the highest since 1946).
Over 50% of Britain's 2,500 stations are now equipped with Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance systems. There are 20,000 CCTV cameras on the network and over 500 stations have cameras that are centrally monitored.
Rail is nine times safer than car travel and about the same as air travel.

Innovative schemes that improve services for rail-cycle passengers have been lauded.

The National Cycle Rail Awards, which are sponsored by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC), celebrate the groundbreaking work being done by train companies, associated industry groups and individuals across the country to encourage the combined use of cycle and rail travel.
