Railways contribute just 0.5% of total UK carbon dioxide emissions compared to 21% for road transport; average rail emissions of CO2 per passenger km are approximately half of those from cars and a quarter of domestic aviation.
Britons travelled on average 826 kilometres in 2007/08. They made an average of 20.7 journeys with an average journey length of 39.9 kilometres.
The latest National Passenger Survey (Spring 2008) showed that 80% of passengers are satisfied with their rail journey - a 2% improvement on the same period in 2007.

Rail passengers can now receive up to the minute service disruption information that may affect their journey by simply following National Rail Enquiries from their Twitter account. They can even register for updates to be sent to their mobile phones.
ATOC RESPONDS TO LATEST NATIONAL PASSENGER SURVEY

The latest National Passenger Survey (Spring 2009) published today by Passenger Focus finds 81 % of passengers across Great Britain are satisfied with their rail journey – up from 80% in the survey at the same time last year. Amongst other factors, this reflects the recent record levels of punctuality achieved across the rail network.
