Over half a million journeys were made by overseas tourists in 2005, generating in excess of £20 million revenue.
Over 50% of Britain's 2,500 stations are now equipped with Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance systems. There are 20,000 CCTV cameras on the network and over 500 stations have cameras that are centrally monitored.
In 2006/7 one billion and 164 million journeys were made (more than in any year since 1958) and a total of 46.5 billion passenger kilometres travelled (the highest since 1946).

The latest National Passenger Survey (Spring 2008) published today by Passenger Focus finds 80% of passengers satisfied with their rail journey – up from 79% in the same survey last year reflecting train operators’ success in improving train services.

Nearly one year on from the Rail White Paper “Delivering a Sustainable Railway” (July 2007), which put the rail passenger centre stage, the industry is improving the journey experience for its passengers and providing ticket types to suit all pockets, says the Association of Train Operating Companies.
