In 2006/7 one billion and 164 million journeys were made (more than in any year since 1958) and a total of 46.5 billion passenger kilometres travelled (the highest since 1946).
Rail is nine times safer than car travel and about the same as air travel.
The average age of the passenger rolling stock is 13.2 years – Britain has one of Europe’s youngest train fleets.

This Discussion Paper has been produced by train operators to demonstrate the potential for increasing the capacity of the existing rail network to meet predicted growth in demand. It looks first at passenger’s needs and future demand pressures, and then at the pinchpoints and how they could be overcome.
