Railways contribute just 0.5% of total UK carbon dioxide emissions compared to 21% for road transport; average rail emissions of CO2 per passenger km are 45% of those from cars, 27% of short haul air and 64% of buses.
In 2006/7 one billion and 164 million journeys were made (more than in any year since 1958) and a total of 46.5 billion passenger kilometres travelled (the highest since 1946).
Rail moves 20% more people into London than ten years ago. During the peak periods an average of 451,000 commuters travels by rail into the capital every working day.
