Laing Rail won the original Chiltern Railways franchise in 1996. A new 20-year franchise was granted in 2002.

Since winning the original franchise in 1996, Chiltern Railways has run scheduled passenger services along the M40 corridor between London Marylebone and Birmingham Snow Hill, and London Marylebone to Aylesbury via Amersham along the London Underground Metropolitan line.

In 2002 Chiltern Railways extended its operations as far as Kidderminster and in 2004 took over services between Stratford-upon-Avon and London.

Chiltern Railways is owned by M40 Trains. All shares in M40 Trains are owned by John Laing plc through Laing Rail Ltd.
