The latest National Passenger Survey (Spring 2008) published today by Passenger Focus finds 80% of passengers satisfied with their rail journey – up from 79% in the same survey last year reflecting train operators’ success in improving train services.

The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) and Ptarmigan Transport Solutions, have selected Brightwave, the workplace communication, learning and performance specialists to design and deliver a new, national, e-learning programme for ticket office retail staff to communicate the simplicity of a new ticketing system for rail fares.

Passengers have been asking for simpler rail fares and train operators are responding by introducing a much simpler structure for rail fares across the National Rail network in 2008, it was announced today by the Association of Train Operating Companies. More widely-available discounts for railcards are also being introduced.

The use of Britain’s railways, as measured by passenger miles, is now at the highest level ever recorded in peace time, according to figures published today by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) in “The Billion Passenger Railway”. 30.1 billion passenger miles were generated in 2007 and the railway carried 1.213 billion passengers - an increase of 7.8 per cent compared to the 1.125 billion passenger journeys made in 2006.

Rail passengers are reminded that Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are likely to be very busy and that anyone planning to travel by train should plan their journey in advance. Up to three million passengers are expected to take the train on Maundy Thursday 20th March, one of the busiest days of the year for rail travel. Good Friday 21st March will also be busy but the other days over Easter are expected to quieter.
